As I walk through the pantry, I see WAFER’s shelves well stocked with soup, but nearly every can of it is tomato. As long as that’s your favorite kind of soup, there’s no problem. What if, though, you don’t enjoy tomato soup in the least?
At WAFER, we try to keep a variety of food items so that anyone coming to the pantry will leave with foods they like. Sometimes, though, particularly in summer and early fall, when donated food tends to be minimal, there is very little choice.
I know what you’re going to say: if someone is hungry, they should be willing to eat anything. However, put yourself in our client’s place. What if the only meat you received was blood sausage, tripe, or something else you found unpalatable? What if you were allergic to tomatoes? What if your child cried because they were forced to eat a food he or she would rather spit out?
WAFER counts on its donors to help us provide a nutritious variety of foods to our clients. We thrive on food drives as they mean we will see ten or twenty kinds of soup, rather than the one or two types we purchase within WAFER’s budget.
The more choices WAFER can offer, the more likely clients will be able to put an enjoyable meal on the table. Please remember WAFER when you clean out your own pantry and help us fill our shelves with all kinds of wonderful foods.
